Why a notorious Phoenix murder still raises questions 95 years later
Oct. 16 is the 95th anniversary of one of Phoenix's oldest and most notorious murders. The "Trunk Murders" in 1931, which occurred in Phoenix, Arizona, are still raising questions about the circumstances surrounding the murders of Agnes Anne LeRoi and Hedvig "Sammy" Samuelson. The women were fatally shot and then transported to California by Winnie Ruth Judd, who was the only person ever tried for their murders. Despite this, many are skeptical about the true circumstances of the murders and whether Judd acted alone. The three women knew each other from a local X-ray clinic in Phoenix and shared intimate secrets. Some believe that Judd's affair with wealthy lumber businessman Jack Halloran led to a fight after it was revealed that Samuelsen introduced Halloran to a woman rumored to have syphilis. While the murders were never solved, Judd was eventually tracked down and sentenced to death for her crimes and declared insane.
