PHOENIX (AZFamily) — Sky Harbor airport officials are warning of increased traffic throughout Final Four weekend as fans travel to the Valley for the tournament.

The airport expects heavy traffic on Thursday and Friday but warns the busiest days will be Sunday, Apr. 7, after the Final Four games and Tuesday, Apr. 9, after the championship game.

“Especially that Tuesday after, we’ve been seeing increased passenger traffic already from January through February and we expect that to continue this weekend as well,” said Heather Shelbrack, Deputy Aviation Director of Public Relations.

With thousands of fans expected to travel through Terminal 4, Shelbrak reassures travelers that the airport has meticulously prepared for this weekend all year.

“We have increased staff we have also increased volunteers, so you’ll see volunteers throughout the terminals. This includes our aviation volunteers as well as our final four volunteers who will be in the terminals to help assist travelers and help assist those that have questions about the various festivities.”

Ahead of the tournament, Sky Harbor advises to remember the ‘5, 4, 3, 2, 1′ method:

• None 5 hours before departure - Check out of your hotel

• None 4 hours before departure – Turn in your rental car

• None 3 hours before departure – Check in at the Ticket Counter

• None 2 hours before departure – Get in line at the TSA Security Checkpoint

• None 1 hour before departure – Be at your gate.

If you have folks coming into town for the games, the airport urges you to utilize the Sky Train’s 24th Street or 44th Street stations to avoid terminal curb congestion. It also encourages parties to book rental cars ahead of time because walk-up customers will have limited availability.

If you want to avoid waiting in TSA lines, Sky Harbor encourages you to check out the free PHX RESERVE program that will save your place in line.
