In the Phoenix market, the partnership focuses on autonomous delivery by partnering with merchants including Princess Pita, Filiberto’s and BoSa Donuts.
Customers can order as usual and see a notification indicating that “autonomous vehicles may deliver your order.” They can opt out of this and choose courier delivery instead.
Customers use their phones to unlock the vehicle and retrieve their ordered items on arrival.
In March 2024, Uber Eats Japan launched self-driving robot delivery services in Tokyo in a bid to address the country’s labour shortage.
The robots, developed by Cartken, are currently operational at two stores in Tokyo’s Nihonbashi neighbourhood, with plans to expand further.
When customers place an order through Uber Eats, Cartken’s autonomous robot, Model C, collects the order from the designated store and delivers it to the customer’s address.
The orders are secured until customers unlock them using a key within the app, ensuring a seamless delivery experience.
