I served my country. My community deserves protection
Saul Perea Moreno, an Army veteran and west Phoenix resident, argues that "every family deserves clean air, safe streets, shade, and the opportunity to build a future without having to leave the place they love." Saul Perea Moreno, a Phoenix native, is a U.S. Army veteran and community advocate working to improve quality of life in neighborhoods facing extreme heat and underinvestment. Moreno's community in Maryvale, west Phoenix, experiences some of Arizona's highest environmental burdens, including extreme heat, poor air quality and aging infrastructure. This comes as climate change makes Arizona even hotter and communities like Maryvale will continue to pay the highest price due to extreme heat. Moreno argues that public health investments should be public health projects, not luxury projects. As neighborhoods improve, existing residents should be first in line for good-paying local jobs and workforce development programs.
