Massachusetts man gets prison for making bomb threat to Arizona election office A Massachusetts man has been sentenced three years and six months in federal prison for making an online threat to bomb then-Arizona Secretary of State Katie Hobbs’ election office. The Justice Department said James Clark's sentencing on Tuesday in U.S. District Court in Phoenix followed his guilty plea last August to sending a communication containing a bomb threat to an election official. The 2001 threat was one of many made against Hobbs, a Democrat, after then-Republican President Donald Trump claimed without evidence the 2020 presidential election had been stolen. Democrat Joe Biden won in Arizona by about 10,000 votes. An email request for comment was left Wednesday with Clark’s court-appointed federal public defender in Phoenix. The ad does not mention Kari Lake, the front-runner for the Republican nomination and a loyal Donald Trump supporter. Public access: Sue, or relent? A look at Arizona and other states A nationwide review of state procedures by The Associated Press and CNHI News reveals a patchwork of complicated systems for resolving open government disputes that often put the burden of enforcing transparency laws on private citizens. The review found fewer than a third of states have offices that can resolve residents’ complaints by forcing agencies to turn over documents or comply with open meetings requirements. In most states, the only meaningful option for residents to resolve complaints about agencies wrongfully withholding public records is to file costly lawsuits. The review is timed to Sunshine Week, an observance of the importance of public access to government information. Read morePublic access: Sue, or relent? A look at Arizona and other states
