Arizona SNAP decline threatens free school meals as Phoenix families turn to food assistance
As SNAP participation declines across Arizona, the Creighton School District is seeing growing demand for food assistance while facing potential cuts to federal funding for free school meals. Phoenix school district is facing challenges in maintaining school meals free for students due to changes to federal eligibility requirements and declining participation. Over 400,000 fewer Arizonans are receiving Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits, including over 150,000 children. Arizona has seen the largest percentage decline in SNAP participation of any state in the country. The Creighton Family Resource Center in Phoenix has seen a significant increase in demand for weekly food distribution due to rising food costs and financial pressures. The district is exploring other options to allow students to continue receiving free meals. Currently, every student at The Creille Academy can receive free breakfast and lunch through the federal Community Eligibility Provision (CEP), which allows schools serving high-need communities to offer meals to all students without individual applications for free or reduced-price meals.
