Can art get people to vote? This Phoenix group is betting on it
Civic engagement can take many shapes and forms — and media. For Fuerte Arts Movement, the goal is to get Phoenix residents involved by invoking emotion through artivism. Fuerte Arts Movement, a Phoenix-based nonprofit that mobilizes civic action via artistic movements and cultural performances, has been founded by Xenia Orona and Dominique Medina. The group is using concerts, zines, community murals, and musicians to get people to the polls ahead of the Nov. 3 election. Oronas and Medina believe that art can reach voters faster than conventional outreach, tapping into emotions and memories. The nonprofit has also produced zines and hosted community art groups. Stephen Duncombe, a New York University professor of media and culture, co-founded the Center for Artistic Activism, has worked with artists on grassroots voting campaigns in Arizona.
